Try to signup twice with the same Email and Username to reproduce this error message at Mailchimp. Although we are madly in love with the overall UX at Mailchimp, we don´t think this error is a good way to say, that this users might be signed up already.
A simple textlink at the end of the phrase, e.g. “Already signed up?” linking to the login form, with his username filled out might do the trick.
Handle errors with fun. Never blame your users. Offer a way out.
